Barker Causes Elderly Woman's Death - Enter My Raffle For a Free Lesson

So... want to hear how a barking dog killed an elderly woman?

Here's what happened:

Someone I knew a few years ago had... not HAS... that's one of the tragic consequences of this story...

She HAD a beautiful dog - gorgeous show dog actually - who didn't care much for other dogs. And when a dog walked down the street, past her house, he'd get up in the window and bark his fool head off 'til the other dog passed.

And he WAS ALLOWED to do this, right? She never trained him not to do it... just tolerated it and would sometimes tell him to stop (that's not training) - and this went on for YEARS!

Well, this unaddressed behavior led to an old woman's death.

One day this elderly woman was walking her golden retriever on the street, past this barking dog's house, and he got up in the window, barking, barking, barking... and a family member walked in the door... and at that moment, the beautiful barking show dog charged out the door and attacked the golden. The old woman tried to fight off the attacker and protect her beloved pet… and had a heart attack… and died.

The barker’s owner got sued and also had to euthanize her precious kid she adored.

Tough lesson.

Does your dog bark at other dogs or people walking past the property?

In my opinion, this is rude and unnecessary behavior. You don’t own the street. LOL

When I had my girls – Dobermans - I was always quite concerned about them not doing anything to scare the neighbors. I never wanted poison meat thrown over my fence. So, I trained my dogs to be quiet in the yard. They could go up to the fence to say hello but no chasing, stalking, or barking.

Makes them better neighbors and less threatening to people.

If this is an issue in your home, or if you have any other issues you’d like to work on with your dog, enter my raffle for a free lesson! The drawing is January 15.

How cool would it be to have a trained dog? I can tell you: VERY!

Let’s do it!

My neighbor has a dog that will bark non stop. They never do anything to make it stop. Several years ago I took a bark collar and a hand held bark trainer over to them. While I was there, the dog kept barking and 5 family members never said a word to the dog. I know they tried the bark collar because I heard the dog yelp when she got shocked. They didn't really use the items, so they returned them. This dog is allowed to bark at all hours of the day and night. Now, I just call and hang up during the wee hours of the morning and they bring the dog in. They are great neighbors, but not dog trainers.

Hi Nancy!

I totally understand the annoyance of barking dogs in the neighborhood. I don’t have that problem where I live now, but I have had it at other residences in the past.

The sad thing is, typically, these dogs are not getting their needs met. The yards are their babysitters. Dogs that are properly exercised, socialized and trained, don’t annoy the neighbors!

I don’t use pain to train dogs. I teach that we need to socialize, desensitize, train, supervise.

When I’ve had this problem with neighbors in the past, I’ve been lucky enough to live in counties where animal control took complaints seriously. A call to animal control brings an officer out to “educate” the owner and voila! No more barking dogs.

Still, it’s sad to know the dog is still not getting his needs met. Now, instead of running around in the yard, he’s locked up in the house. However, I have my own sanity to consider.

The majority of dogs are neglected in this respect. They don’t get enough exercise. Dogs that are properly exercised SLEEP. That’s how I lived in an apartment with my Doberman, my baby, Jetta, for eight years. Twice a day – religiously - I took her to the park to run. When she was in that apartment, she was dead asleep. This is perfect for dogs!
