Snickers, who I trained by phone years ago... 11 years old now. Good girl Snickers! Guess What is the #1 Complaint of Raffle Entrants? Barking! About 75% of the people who entered my raffle for a free lesson want me to help them with... BARKING All kinds of barking. Here's the question I asked raffle entrants: If you win the lesson, what would you like me to help you with? Some of the answers: "Barking." "Barking issues." "Fear barking." "Barking at passing dogs." "He sees another dog and barks uncontrollably, all while huffing and puffing." "How to get our dog to stop barking and growling at everybody walking by our house!" "My barker who barks at everything, including leaves and who taught my other dog to bark." "Our dog barks at everything, including cars just driving by our house." "Barking!! I do not mind if warning me of danger but one barks at everything, including falling leaves, and so our other one joins in." "My corgi is very jealous of my border collie and barks at her. She barks at moving things like bikes, the quad, car, etc." "I have a barker who rushes through the house barking at anything that goes by.... driving me crazy... would love your help with this!!" And... "MAKE HER STOP BARKING." And it gets worse... And people do this... Gets people hurt and dogs killed... "My dog loves to approach strangers by barking, growling and even snapping at them. The worst part being when I call her off she ignores me and continues scaring the piss out of these poor folks. I have to trick her into the car to get her to come to me. Please help!" Ouch... scary! And dangerous. It could be just a matter of time... I would love to help! For her sake, for yours and for the other people. Remember my newsletter a couple weeks ago? (See below.) The barker who got out the door and attacked a dog walking past the house, causing the old woman walking the dog to have a heart attack and die? Not good. Old lady dead, attacking dog euthanized, owner sued. This problem is more than mere "barking," but guess what? Barking is a big part of it and needs to be addressed. And another... AND A LOT OF PEOPLE DO THIS! "Our dog acts like she is going to kill people who come into our house, then we just have them ignore her and she is fine in a minute or two, but it can be terrifying for our guests. I'd like to fix that!" Me too! This is so dangerous! Not just because of the dog’s behavior but because PEOPLE are unpredictable.
Some people reach out, trying to calm barking/threatening dogs, and can EASILY get bitten. They don't always follow your instructions. And even if your friends typically do, it takes just one who doesn't. The other problem is that dogs change. They change just like people change. And this could get worse in the future, especially with all the practice and reinforcement she's getting for it. Please solve this problem now. And please… Never, ever use punishment. That damages a dog’s temperament (which cannot be fixed), shuts him down, and APPEARS to work at first, but in the long run, doesn't. (We call these dogs “ticking time bombs.”) We want to use positive reinforcement to CHANGE THE DOG’S MIND about these triggers. Let’s teach him to LOVE people coming into the house! You all need my whole lesson, but I can help in even a short consultation costing almost nothing. Such a small investment can make a huge difference! The drawing is Sunday. There’s no fee to enter and you can win a complete dog training lesson! Click on the "Raffle Signup" tab at top. Good luck to all of you in the raffle!
