Pilling Tricks How do you pill your dog? Have you ever done this? That’s how I learned to do it when I was a teenager and got my first dog. I forced her mouth open and stuck my hand in her mouth, placing the pill on the back of her tongue so she'd swallow it. Ugh! (That’s what she said too!) Then I learned to hide the pill in a piece of meat or cheese, but sometimes the pill would fall out, or she’d detect it and separate it, eating the meat and spitting out the pill. Later I figured out another way that worked MUCH BETTER... Click here for a better way to pill your dog... __________________________________________________________________________________ Get two treats and a piece of meat or cheese, then stick the pill in the meat/cheese. Show him all three treats. Give him #1 to whet his appetite. #2 is the meat or cheese with the pill in it. Just hold it for a sec. Bait him with #3. While doing so, give him #2 with the pill inside. He should quickly swallow the pill/treat so he can hurry and get #3. For me, this has always worked like a charm.
Another winner is to feed the pills in peanut butter or cream cheese, both of which are sticky and can fully engulf the pill. I used to give Jetta several vitamins a day, and I'd do so by dipping a butter knife into a jar of peanut butter, and pulling out the knife, coated with PB. Then I'd stick all the pills on top of the peanut butter and she'd put her mouth around the pills/peanut butter and pull the whole thing off the knife. She SAW the pills and still gobbled it all up easily. BTW, I am aware of commercial products (like “Pill Pockets”) into which you insert pills, but I never used them. Why spend money unnecessarily? Try these ideas if you’re sticking your hand down your dog’s throat or if he is spitting out his pills. Good luck!
